Dr. F. Gigi Osler2017 Canadian Medical Association
President-Elect nominee

Winner of the 2017 Health or Safety Promotion Award from Doctors Manitoba!

Thank you all for your support! It is a great honour to be the 2017 President-Elect nominee for the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) and I am excited at this opportunity to serve Canada’s medical students, residents, and doctors. I am passionate about the health of our patients and our profession, and will work with the CMA to:

  1. Establish the CMA as a leader in physician health
    • Physician stress and burnout levels are higher than ever: in a recent survey of doctors, 62% reported feeling at risk of burnout with higher rates in family physicians and younger doctors
    • Improving our work-life balance requires more than just talking about resiliency - both individual and organizational strategies are needed
  2. Promote physician leadership development
    • Our healthcare system is facing more challenges than ever before and it is vital that physicians play an active role in healthcare planning, management, and governance
    • Leadership development strengthens our position as stewards of our limited healthcare resources
  3. Make the CMA more relevant for all doctors
    • The CMA is looking to better engage with members
    • As your President-Elect, I will listen to what members feel they need and want from the CMA

Born and raised in Winnipeg, I completed both medical school and residency training at the University of Manitoba. My father was a hard-working GP in solo practice and he was my inspiration and role model. My husband and I have raised two wonderful children here and I am proud to call myself a Manitoba doctor. Balancing work and family is not always easy, and I understand the day-to-day challenges we all face.

Along with being a busy ENT (Otolaryngology-Head and Neck) surgeon in Winnipeg for the last 19 years, I am an Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba and have helped train numerous medical students and residents. Some of my current local, provincial, and national medical leadership positions include:

  • Head of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at St. Boniface Hospital
  • Chair of the Physician Health and Wellness Committee and past Chair of the Section of Otolaryngology for Doctors Manitoba
  • RAC 2 and Professional Learning and Development Committees for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
  • Chair of the Continuing Professional Development and Global Health Committees for the Canadian Society of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery

I am looking forward to working for my fellow doctors as both Canada and the CMA celebrate our 150th anniversaries!
